Anyone with experience and/or knowledge relating to justice, the criminal justice system, what’s wrong with it, and how to make it work better can be a guest on our show. We especially prioritize persons who practice or are familiar with the role of faith and religious institutions as they relate to the justice system. We also prioritize guests who can tell a thoughtful story learned from experience or from research.
Before every interview, we do a detailed pre-interview with our guest. By the time we record, we know their story and perspective, so the host and guest can talk freely in a space that feels safe. What you hear is that conversation, not a performance.
Our editing is there to make an episode focused and rich, not to change what a guest meant. The goal is to help you understand their story without losing their voice.
Some have argued that since the criminal justice system has often failed to provide justice for whole groups of people, we should call it something else, like the “criminal legal system.” However, since most people understand what we mean by the criminal justice system, we have opted to use this term.
Just Stories is funded by Lilly Endowment and is part of More Than Just Stories at Goshen College. That support doesn’t shape what we make or who we talk to. Our independence and our commitment to speaking with everyone across this spectrum are in the show’s DNA.
